We primarily hold sieved putty but small quantities of unsieved may be available. These are suitable for mixing with aggregates to form lime mortars and renders.
Supplied in 15 litre tubs and one tonne bags
Mixing lime putty and sand will require considerable effort. Chopping, kneading and beating the lime putty and sand together is necessary until a uniform colour is achieved. It is tricky to mix these materials to the required consistency using modern site practices.
For optimum results use a mechanical mixer, ideally a roller pan mixer. This mixer combines the materials with no water needed. Other mixers may require more water. Prior to use lime putty mortars definitely benefit from additional maturing and reworking.
Lime putty mortars can be stored indefinitely in plastic buckets (airtight). However keep them away from frost. They will need to be reworked before use.
General Mix Ratios
Plasters contain more lime than Mortars, but mix ratios are defined by the particle size for binding, the need to adhere to substrates,or to bring out the colour of the sand .
Depending on the aggregate particle size, 'the more fines, the more lime' needed. Sand to lime ratios (sand : lime) are generally, Mortars 3:1, Renders 2.5:1, Plasters 2:1
Plasters may sometimes be richer in lime for adhesion, mortars leaner in lime for colour
Stone work & Renders - 4mm sharps sands
Brick work & External Plaster - 2mm sharp sands
Ashlar stone & top coat Plaster - 0.5mm sharp sand
