Limewash consists of sieved lime putty held in suspension in water. It originately was used as a sacrificial coating to lime render. After the lime render had cured, thin coats of natural limewash were applied to build up a protective coat on the render. The weather took its toll and the limewash was reapplied, again in thin coats. The limewash complements the natural properties of flexibility and breathability of the lime render.
Method of application
Natural limewash is supplied in 15 litre tubs. Each tub will cover approximately 42 square metres at one coat. Four to six coats will be required depending on the surface being painted.
- Make sure surfaces are sound.
- Damp down all surfaces.
- Stir tub thoroughly before and during use
- Apply a thin coat using a distemper brush, brushing the wash well into the surface.
- Allow first coat to dry (24 hours).
- Damp down surface and apply second coat. Repeat until substrate is covered completely.
Limewash can be coloured using natural pigments. See colour card. If using pigment, mix the pigment with a small amount of water before adding to the limewash.
